Hello Dave,
How is it that David Miller was elected for a second term? (other than there was no viable alternative). Too bad John Tory wasn't elected back in the day when he was running for Mayor. I think he would have done a great job!

By the way, we have to going flying again!

Mayor miller has proven over and over and over that he is incapable of running Toronto......he is so out of touch with reality that one can often wonder if he actually lives in this city..the legacy he leaves: a giant parking lot of cars in front of the lake he so proudly claims to have taken back..oh yes that is after you fumble your way through the condos to the man made beach at HT0. But he does seem to have the parking tax under control as there are more meter maids than blades of grass in toronto. PLEASE oh please vote this nightmare out next election.

Right on Dave. I am outraged more has not been made in the media of the TTC union (Amalgamated Transport Workers Local 113) winning the legal right to increase our city taxes by having the TTC pay part their Income tax (provincial Health Premium)retroactive to 2004. Also McGuinty won't change the wording to health tax rather than health premium to avoid this $18 million
TTC union cost to taxpayers.Never mind councillors perks, this city is being financially ruined by CUPE and TTC union wages and benefits we taxpayers
who earn $12.00 per hour and who have to pay increasing taxes to sustain union wages and benefits.

It is outrage!

The problem with seeking "actual results" when tackling environmental issues is that they are no longer very easy to achieve. After decades of destroying many key natural systems on the planet, it takes more than a few practical, unobtrusive solutions to gain any ground. When it comes to something like global warming (which I agree has become something of a buzz word, but nonetheless IS part of a 'big, weighty, important' issue) we have reached the point where nothing short of a major lifestyle change throughout the Wealthy World.

Climate scientists would gladly propose practical solutions, and in fact have -- but they get scoffed at as ridiculous.

Some examples would be:
- make new cars illegal or financially impractical (there is a massive surplus of used cars around the world, and no justifiable reason to manufacture any more)

- put strict industrial emission limits in place (something the Canadian government STILL has not done on anything beyond a volunteer basis, despite pouring considerable funds into things like the 'One Tonne Challenge' -- a perfect example of the 'illusion of doing something' that you mentioned)

As you expand beyond Canada, you meet even more obvious and yet somehow, to most, unfathomable options -- like not spending the same on defence in one week that you do in 2 years of environmental research; or not requiring all government scientists to declare whether or not they 'believe' global warming is real before giving them jobs (would not their job be to determine just that? Scientists don't "believe")

I guess if your are not concerned with the overarching and ever encrouching power of government on civil liberties and the idea of a police state run by martial law doesn't pose a problem for you then I guess having the police interpret as well as enforce the law is OK.

I am not sure I understand your post. So its OK to pollute the environment change the climate to the point where many species are being threatened with extinction but it is bad to have excess packaging? Are they not they same part of a bigger problem, the lack of accountability on the part of industry/business and consumers and their effect on the environment?

Countless scientists and researchers are spending huge amounts of money on looking at the environmental problems and lobbying companies to change their ways. If instead these resources were devoted to helping companies, and the "experts" got into the real world and came up with practical solutions much could be done. But as it stands most researchers would rather float in the realm of the theoretical rather than get their hands dirty helping big industry change there ways.
