The people who denigrate msg intolerance should be in my body tonight. Perhaps they could find some treatable cause for the incredibly crappy way I feel right now. I usually read labels fairly carefully, but I forgot about the carageenan 'may contain'. I went back and looked at the ham label, and there it was!
In response to some of the other comments, eating msg free is only expensive in time. Reading the labels on everything makes shopping a real chore. Fresh or frozen vegetables and fruit are mostly safe, also rice and pasta and beans (not canned or premixed into some fancy all-in-one dinner). Use dehydrated vegetable flakes and tomatoes for seasoning instead of bouillon, talk to local farmers about meat and poultry (if you live in British Columbia, write to your MLA objecting to the new legislation), shop more frequently to avoid relying on canned or processed food. Kikkoman makes a soy sauce that is not hydrolyzed (I have used it without ill-effects).
One other thing that is frequently cited is that glutamate is a natural substance and can't cause an allergic reaction. In real life, glutamate in its natural form (as found in tomatoes etc.) does not seem to bother me at all. The chemically processed stuff makes me feel sick. Whatever that means in terms of definitions, I will continue to try to avoid msg and aspartame and any of the other manufactured "natural" products.

Hi Clark,
Thanks for your comment. I'm not suggesting you must eat organic or go out of your way to prepare time-consuming meals. This is not practical for most people. I'm simply suggesting you stay away from processed foods and eat whole foods instead. Buying locally is an inexpensive option. Snack foods can be both healthy and cheap: raw nuts, vegetables with humus, avocados with lemon juice, sushi, and healthy shakes are some great alternatives.

I've known about these dangers for some time but find the alternative of whole organic foods to be impractical. I haven't the money nore the time to put that much effort into eating. I'm too thin and hypoglycemic to wait for the perfect food to eat when I need to eat. I wish these suggestions were 'do-able'. WAAAAAAAY too expensive. If I were to avoid everything listed above there would be nothing left except whole organic. Have you priced that stuff? It's outragious!! You would think it would be cheaper considering it takes less money to grow. Maybe next life time.

There are many high quality probiotics on the market. I like to use powdered sources derived from human strains since they are more effective than bovine (cow) derived probiotics.
